Access to Public Records

Various state and federal statutes require governmental entities to permit citizen access to public records. Such entities are not always keen to cooperate with those requests, and it is sometimes necessary to invoke legal procedures to force the issue.

Pashman Stein Walder Hayden assists individuals, businesses, and media entities in gaining access to government records. Our attorneys keep abreast of the most recent developments in the field and are therefore skilled at drafting narrow, targeted requests that will increase the probability that access will be provided without the need for litigation.

When litigation is unavoidable, our skilled litigators are adept at obtaining court orders mandating disclosure, often with an award to the client of attorneys’ fees and costs. We have represented activists and concerned citizens in gaining access to municipal financial records, media entities in gaining access to records that assist in coverage of national news stories, and real estate companies in gaining access to records that shed light on the selection of redevelopers for local redevelopment plans and public bids.
