CJ Griffin Quoted in NJ.com Editorial About Changes to OPRA
CJ Griffin, Partner and Director of the Justice Gary S. Stein Public Interest Center at Pashman Stein Walder Hayden P.C., was quoted in an NJ.com editorial “Need to See a Public Record? This Lawmaker Wants You to Get Lost”. The editorial discussed proposed changes to rewrite current state laws regarding access to public records and government documents, as well as a fee shift that would negatively impact both the public and attorneys.
“The fee-shifting provision only comes into play when a requestor prevails. If agencies didn’t unlawfully deny access to records, then there would be no fee awards. But too often we just see ridiculous denials, and agencies that won’t back down from them,” said CJ Griffin.
Speaking on some of the proposed changes, Griffin said “Some of them are so shockingly insane and hostile towards transparency that it blows my mind.”
