CJ Griffin, Partner and Director of the Justice Gary S. Stein Public Interest Center at Pashman Stein Walder Hayden P.C., was recently quoted in a TAPInto Newark article “TAPInto Newark Files Suit Against District for Withholding Public Info”. The article discusses the City of Newark’s Board of Education approval of a double-digit percentage salary adjustment for staffers in Newark’s school systems, and the questions raised by the teachers’ union chief in advance of contract negotiations.
The starting salaries for many of the positions were not available to the public, but OPRA requests were put in for the information. Speaking on the manner, CJ Griffin stated that the salary information must be shared publicly, as per the Open Public Records Act. “Public meetings should be conducted in a manner so the public can understand the reasonableness of an agency’s decision,” said CJ Griffin.
“Every public employee’s salary information is a public record and OPRA says it must be “immediately” disclosed. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t disclose that information in the public meeting, so that the public can be better informed,” said Griffin.
