Pashman Stein Walder Hayden P.C. (Pashman Stein) announced today that retired Union County Superior Court Judge Stuart Peim has joined the firm as Of Counsel, assisting pro bono clients with immigration, criminal and other matters through the Justice Gary S. Stein Public Interest Center at Pashman Stein.

“We are honored that Judge Peim recognized the impactful work that we are doing through the Stein Public Interest Center and has chosen to join us, further strengthening our ability to help people in need access legal representation,” said Pashman Stein Managing Partner Michael S. Stein. “Judge Peim is an incredible asset to our firm and to our community. It is very rare to see an attorney as dedicated, taking on a full, pro bono caseload.”

“We are thrilled to have Judge Peim join our team,” added CJ Griffin, director of the Stein Public Interest Center. “We look forward to working with him to expand the focus of the Stein Public Interest Center to advance immigrants’ rights and to further strengthen our criminal justice practice.”

Judge Peim added, “I am very excited about the work that I will be doing through the Stein Public Interest Center at Pashman Stein, and my ability to have the firm’s strength behind me in my pro bono endeavors. During the course of my career, I have seen many vulnerable people suffer because they did not have access to a lawyer, which is why I have chosen to dedicate my retirement to helping as many of these vulnerable people as possible.”

Through the Stein Public Interest Center, Judge Peim will focus his pro bono practice primarily on representing detained clients in removal and asylum immigration cases in federal courts, including both the District Court and Court of Appeals, involving violations of constitutional rights, as well as of other laws, rules and regulations. Drawing on his extensive experience as a Judge in the Criminal Division, Judge Peim will also assist pro bono clients in criminal matters through the Stein Public Interest Center and consult on matters in the firm’s Criminal Defense and Governmental and Internal Investigations practice.

Prior to his retirement from the bench, Judge Peim served as Superior Court Judge in Union County Superior Court, Criminal Division, from 1999 to 2018, with the exception of two assignments of 18 months each when he served in Juvenile Court. After retiring from the bench in 2018, Judge Peim represented pro bono clients through Legal Services of New Jersey.

Judge Peim began his legal career clerking for the Honorable Edward N. Cahn, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and for the Honorable Francis Van Dusen, in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He served as both Deputy Chief and Chief of the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey. Prior to becoming a Superior Court Judge, Judge Peim was a partner at a New Jersey law firm.

Judge Peim received his J.D. from Rutgers University – Camden School of Law, and his B.A. from The City College of New York.
